You Can Accept A Person Without Approving Of Their Sin – Romans 15:1-13

From my reading in Romans 15:1-13 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

Our culture has pushed the lie that in order to accept someone you must approve of what they do.

This puts Christians in an awkward position. We want to accept everyone equally but we should not approve their sin because the God does not approve it. In one verse Paul gives us the solution.

“Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.” Rom 15:7

How did Christ accept us? He accepted us in spite of our sin.

Jesus accepts us, not because he approves of our sin, but because he died for it!

That is the essence of the good news. We are accepted even though we are sinful.  Therefore we can accept other sinful people. If you find it hard to accept others then maybe you have not reflected on how much Jesus has forgiven you from!

We can accept others because we have been accepted by Jesus!

No matter what you have done you can come to Jesus just as you are and he will accept you and forgive you. If you are willing to repent of your sins and follow him he will save you!

For those of us who have received Christ let this be a reminder to radically accept and love everyone because of how Jesus accepted and loved you!

5 Principles For Dealing With Gray Areas – Romans 14

From my reading in Romans 14 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

There are many gray areas in our modern world where the Bible does not spell out in black and white what we are to do. Fortunately Paul gives us some principles to rely on in these situations.

1. Be sensitive to the convictions of the “weak in faith” even if you don’t agree.

Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. Rom 14:1

Someone who is “weak in faith” is a young or immature believer. If a young believer has a strong opinion about a gray area there may be a good reason from them to be cautious about that particular area. You should respect their conviction and don’t pressure them to do something otherwise.

2. Whatever you do, do it to honor God.

“For we don’t live for ourselves or die for ourselves. If we live, it’s to honor the Lord. And if we die, it’s to honor the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” Rom 14:7-8

Our motivation should always be to honor Christ in gray areas. A good test as to weather you should do something is to ask yourself, “will my doing this honor God?”

3. Live in a way that does not cause others to stumble.

“So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.” Romans 14:13

Be loving in the way you approach gray areas as to not cause those weaker than you to stumble. This does not mean that you have to legalistically follow everything someone else thinks just because they are convicted about it.  It only apples to those who are weaker than you who would stumble when hearing about you doing it.

4. Your goal should be harmony in the church.

“So then, let us aim for harmony in the church and try to build each other up.” Rom 14:19

Harmony and unity in the church should be the goal. We should be willing to sacrifice some gray areas in order to promote further harmony in the church. It is worth it.

5. Don’t go against your personal convictions.

“But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.” Rom 14:23

If you have doubts about something, don’t do it!  If you are feeling convicted about something it may be the Holy Spirit asking you to stop.

I pray that God will give each of us wisdom about the grey areas in our lives and humility to lovingly accept the convictions of others in the body of Christ.

Tips For Biblical Productivity – Summary Of “What’s Best Next” By Matt Perman Part 2

In the part 1 of my summary of What’s Best Next I shared what Matt Perman said about “The Motivation of Gospel Productivity“. In this post I will share the tips that meant most to me from the book.

1. Effectiveness trumps efficiency.

Perman shows us that sometimes efficiency gets in the way effectiveness.

“Sometimes a concern for efficiency undercuts what really matters.”

When we are seeking to glorify God sometimes the most efficient thing is not the most loving thing. Efficiency rarely works with people.

Fellow campus minister Neil Walker wisely has said that we are to be efficient with tasks but not people. Perman says,

“Efficiency [is] getting more things done faster. While efficiency is important, it is secondary. More important than efficiency is effectiveness”

Godly effectivness comes when you are doing the right things in a way that is honoring to God and loving to people.

Sometimes in the quest for efficiency we lose sight of the real motivation for productivity .

2. Our motivation for productivity should be honoring God and serving others.

“Productivity is first about others, not ourselves. A radical concern for others is to be at the heart of our productivity and at the heart of everything we do every day”

When we are living for Christ and others then it changes how we do what we do.  We will be more willing to sacrifice our agenda and serve.

“Avoid a self-protective mindset and take pains to do good for others. We are to do good even if it requires a sacrifice on our part.”

We are to be passionate about being productive in our work because it is our method of serving God and others the way only we can!

3. Every week schedule blocks of time for what is most important.

“Blocks of work time allow me to dive deeply into things without worrying that I will neglect important meetings and appointments and emails.”

One of the greatest take away from the book was that it is better to live by a routine than a list.  Perman uses the acrostic DARE to summarize his method organizing his time.

  1. Define: Know your mission, vision, and roles.
  2. Architect: Weave these things into your life through a flexible schedule.
  3. Reduce: Get rid of the things that don’t fit.
  4. Execute: Make things happen every day.

He wisely tells us, “Don’t prioritize your schedule; schedule your priorities.”

“You need to design your days with large stretches of uninterrupted time for important work… If there is any one ‘secret’ of effectiveness, it is concentration. Effective executives do first things first and they do one thing at a time.” Concentration saves time.

Planning your week every week will allow you to be success in blocking out the time you need for effective work.

“THERE IS ONE SIMPLE PRACTICE that, if you do nothing else, will keep you on track. That practice is weekly planning… Don’t skip planning, even when you are super busy. The biggest reason that people skip planning is because they are busy. This is a trick. Feeling busy is the reason you ought to plan.”

4. Reduce the amount of things you have to do.

Perman gives a genius acrostic that helps in reducing the amout of things we have to do.

DEAD

  1. Delegate – get someone else to do it.
  2. Eliminate – don’t do it at all.
  3. Automate – find a way to do it automatically.
  4. Defer – do it later.

5. Decide “what is best next” to do and fully focus on accomplishing it!

“The human brain simply cannot focus on two things at once. God is the only multitasker… So what are we actually doing when we think we are multitasking? We are actually switchtasking. That is, we are switching back and forth between tasks.”

Trying to multitask is one of the greatest barriers to productivity in our generation. It often leads to procrastination because we get distracted with less important things.

Perman suggests a very helpful practice to help avoid procrastination.

“In cases in which you are most significantly tempted to procrastinate, the best thing to do is procrastinate positively: do nothing. Not something else, but nothing. This will help you avoid “procrastination in disguise.”

Focusing completely on what the most important tasks ensures you get your priorities done and gives you more time for the less important things as well!

There are many more practical tips that I don’t have space to go into in this post so I encourage you to pick up a copy of the book.

You have one chance to make the most of the life God has given you!

“What’s Best Next” can help you make the most of it!

7 Ways To Be A Model Citizen – Romans 13

boyscout08

From my reading in Romans 13 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

1. Submit to the government.

“Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.” Rom 13:1

2. Submit not just to avoid punishment, but to keep a clear conscience.

“So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.” Rom 13:5

3. Pay your taxes.

Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do. Give to everyone what you owe them: Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them, and give respect and honor to those who are in authority.” Rom 13:6-7

4. Let love be your only debt.

“Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.” Rom 13:8

5. Let love keep you from other sins and crimes.

“For the commandments say, “You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.” These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.” Rom 13:9-10

6. Don’t participate in darkness, instead be a shining example of right living.

“The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.” Rom 13:12-13

7. Don’t even think about ways to follow your sinful nature.

“Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.” Rom 13:14

The Motivation For Gospel Productivity – Summary Of “What’s Best Next” By Matthew Perman Part 1

In What’s Best NextHow the Gospel Transforms the Way You Get Things Done, Matthew Perman shares invaluable practical wisdom on how to glorify God and help others by being effective in your work.

“THIS IS A BOOK ABOUT GETTING THINGS DONE and making ideas happen, with less friction and frustration, from a biblical perspective.”

Perman shares the purpose of productivity.

“Productivity is first about doing good for others to the glory of God.”

Our desire to be productive should be fueled by our passion to glorify God.

Perman challenges traditional motivations for productivity.

“According to the Bible, a truly productive life is lived in service to others. Being productive is not about seeking personal peace and affluence because God made us for greater goals.”

Our desire to glorify God and do good works is a much more compelling motivation toward productivity than personal prosperity and peace of mind.

“a life of doing good for others is actually the most exciting life, for God calls us to find ways of doing good with a sense of creativity, competence, and adventure.”

John Wesley agrees with Perman that Christians are to be diligent in pursuing good works for the glory of God.

“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.”

The good news is that you don’t have to quit your job and to be doing good works!

“The things that we are doing every day when we are being productive — answering emails, going to meetings, making supper for the family — are not just things we are doing. They are good works…. They are themselves part of the good works that God created us for in Christ. And, therefore, they have great meaning.”

So what is the Christian’s motivation for gospel productivity? Matthew Perman summarizes it well.

“The best way to be productive is to put others first. This is both what the gospel teaches us and the most exciting life.”

Part 2 of my summary will highlight some of the practical steps Matthew Perman teaches in “What’s Best Next” I found most helpful.

16 Instructions That Will Transform Your Life – Romans 12

From my reading in Romans 12 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

1. Give yourself completely to God as a living sacrifice.

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable.” Rom 12:1

2. Don’t conform to the world, instead be transformed by the truth.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”  Rom 12:2

3. Don’t have an inflated opinion of yourself, be realistic.

“Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.” Rom 12:3

4.  Use whatever gift you have been given to serve others to the best of your ability.

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”  Rom 12:6-8

5. Don’t just pretend to care, actually love people!

“Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them.” Rom 12:9b

6. Hate evil and love good.

“Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.” Rom 12:9b

7. Genuinely love and honor others.

“Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.” Rom 12:10

8. Don’t be lazy, work hard serving God!

“Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.” Rom 12:11

9. Rejoice in hope, be patient in hard times, and always keep praying.

“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.” Rom 12:12

10. Be ready and eager to help those in need and offer hospitality.

“When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.” Rom 12:13

11. Bless and pray for those who persecute you.

“Bless those who persecute you. Don’t curse them; pray that God will bless them.” Rom 12:14

12. Be sympathetic toward others.

“Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.” Rom 12:15

13. Humbly enjoy the company of all types of people.

“Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!” Rom 12:16

14. Always take the high road.

“Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.” Rom 12:17

15. Pursue peace if at all possible.

“Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone.” Rom 12:18

16. Never take revenge, instead overcome evil with good.

“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say,“I will take revenge;I will pay them back,” says the Lord. Instead “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” Romans 12:19-21

The Purpose Of Everything – Romans 11:19-36

From my reading in Romans 11:19-36 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

God created everything for his glory!

The Apostle Paul wrote,

“For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen.” Rom 11:36

For everything comes from him…

There is nothing that exists that God didn’t create. When he created the world he made it all good, but we sinned and messed everything up.

…and exists by his power…

God is the one who holds everything together. Without his grace life as we know it would cease.

…and is intended for his glory.

Everything was made for God’s glory. Unfortunately sin has made it possible for us to do many things that don’t glorify God.

But when we are glorifying God we are fulfilling our original purpose.

If you ever wonder what the purpose of life is, the Bible gives us the answer, to glorify God.

Have you been seeking to glorify God in your life?
What can you do today to fulfill this purpose?

Start living for his glory today and see the joy and fulfillment you will get from fulfilling your purpose!

Salvation Is Through God’s Kindness, Not Works – Romans 11:1-18

From my reading in Romans 11:1-18 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

Throughout the book of Romans I keep coming across a the theme of salvation by grace alone.

“It is the same today, for a few of the people of Israel have remained faithful because of God’s grace—his undeserved kindness in choosing them. And since it is through God’s kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved.” Rom 11:5-6

Some of the Israelites remained faithful because God was kind enough to choose them.  It was not because of their own efforts to do God works.

In order for grace to be grace it has to be free and undeserved!

I love the fact that we can not earn our salvation. We must trust Jesus to forgive us and realize that no matter how good our intentions are we can never measure up to God’s standard.

Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross was the greatest expression of God’s kindness to us.

All you have to do is turn from your sins, accept that free and undeserved gift, and give your life to Jesus.

If you have never accepted that gift then what are you waiting for?

If you have then stop trying to pay God back for what he has done and just live out of loving gratitude.

Why I’m Passionate About Missions – Romans 10

From my reading in Romans 10 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

Salvation only comes from believing in Jesus and making him Lord of your life.

Unless a person believes in Christ they can not be saved. Paul puts it this way,

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced. 12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They have the same Lord, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Rom 10:9-13

The good news is that salvation is open to everyone who will call on the name of Jesus.

Anyone who puts their faith in Christ will never be rejected! That is why we should be so motivated toward missions. Those people who have never heard about Jesus will die in their sin and experience eternal separation from God in Hell. Paul puts it this way,

“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” 16 But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “Lord, who has believed our message?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” Rom 10:14-17

If people have never heard of Jesus how can they believe in him?

That is why we must be passionate about taking the good news to all nations. Our churches should be all about sending people out to the nations to tell them about Jesus. Saving faith comes when a faithful missionary is willing to sacrifice comfort, time, and energy in order to go to the unreached.

What part are you playing in this task? What part should you be playing?

Some are called to send others. Some are called to pray diligently for others and for the nations. Some are called to give generously. Others are called to go to the places where people have never heard of Jesus.

One of the things on my bucket list is to share the gospel with someone who has never even heard the name Jesus.

I pray that more people would get serious about God’s passion for the nations. People will die without knowing Jesus if we don’t go and tell them!

Salvation Is Not About Trying, It’s About Trusting – Romans 9:16-33

From my reading in Romans 9:16-33 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

We are saved by grace through faith.

The apostle Paul uses the example of the faith of the Gentiles and compares it to how many of the Jewish people were attempting to earn salvation.

What does all this mean? Even though the Gentiles were not trying to follow God’s standards, they were made right with God. And it was by faith that this took place. But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded.” Rom 9:30-31

The Gentiles were not even originally trying to follow God’s standards, but were made right with God because of their faith.

God can save anyone.  No matter what sins you have committed God can forgive you.  The message is not, try hard enough and maybe you will get in heaven. The message is…

Salvation is NOT about trying, it’s about trusting!

We are to trust Christ’s forgiveness and that he paid the penalty for all of our sins on the cross!

The Jewish people on the other hand were trying to get right with God by obeying the commands. They never succeeded because there is no way for us to be perfect. Jesus was the only one who lived a perfect life and that is why he was the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

Trying to earn your salvation causes you to miss the whole point.

If you are trying to earn your salvation then you will are doing the opposite of what will actually save you!

Stop trying and accept the forgiveness of Jesus! That is the only way to experience salvation!
