What Are You Willing To Sacrifice To See People Saved? – Romans 9:1-15

From my reading in Romans 9:1-15 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

Someone has to sacrifice for someone else to be saved.

Jesus sacrificed his life so that we could be saved. The Apostle Paul was not only willing to die to see his Jewish brothers and sisters saved he was willing to go to Hell for them!

“My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief  for my people, my Jewish brothers and sisters. I would be willing to be forever cursed—cut off from Christ!—if that would save them.” Romans 9:2-3

That is radical love!  You may not be at the same place as Paul but the question is…

What are you willing to sacrifice to see people saved?

Money? Time? Energy? Comfort? All of these things need to be sacrificed for people to get saved.

It takes money to send missionaries and support churches.

It takes time to invest in others and share the good news with people.

It takes energy to pray for people and really care about the lost.

It takes us going out of our comfort zones and being willing to do awkward things sometimes.

Maybe a better question is…What are you NOT willing to sacrifice to see people saved?

What you are not willing to give up is often the thing that has become your idol.

I encourage you to pray that God would bring you to a place where you are willing to give up your very life for others to come to Jesus.

We all must sacrifice something in order to see others saved and the see gospel spread to the whole world!

#TheStruggleIsReal With Sin – Romans 7

From my reading in Romans 7 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

All people, Christian and non Christian alike struggle with sin!

Even the Apostle Paul struggled with the pull of his sinful nature.  He was in the battle.

“I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.” Rom 7:15

If you meet anyone who can’t identify with this statement they are lying!

We all have things in our lives that we struggle with. We don’t want to be lazy but we sleep in. We don’t intend to gossip but it comes out of us.

If you are a Christian you are in a battle.

You have the Holy Spirit living in you. He is giving you new good desires but you also still have the sinful nature in you with bad desires.

If we are not filled with the Spirit and relying on him daily you will naturally slip back into old sin patterns.  Even those of us with the best intentions we can’t achieve perfection. The most mature Christians still struggle with sin until they get to heaven! Paul said,

“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrongI love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death?” Rom 7:21-24

Who is the one who frees us from being dominated by sin? Paul continues,

“Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.” Rom 7:25

The good news is that only through Jesus we have to power to say no to sin.

People who try to obey by will power alone will never win the battle against sin. Jesus gives us the power to say no to sin and yes to God.  Unfortunately we still often choose to give in to our sinful nature. Next time you find yourself doing something you really don’t want to do confess that sin to God.

Ask Jesus to forgive you and ask the Spirit to fill you and give you the self control to say no next time!

Summary Of The Bible In One Verse – Romans 6

From my reading in Romans 6 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

Can I take a minute and show you the summary of the Bible in one verse?

The Apostle Paul gave us a verse that summarizes the key points of the Bible in a few short words.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom 6:23

For the wages…

When I worked at Chickfila my wages were about $8 an hour and some free chicken. Wages are something you earn for what you do.

…of sin…

Sin is an archery term for missing the mark. When we sin it means that we have broken God’s commandments.

Everyone has sinned. One reason God gave us the commandments was show us that we are sinful. Because of our sin we deserve to be punished and the rightful punishment is…

… death…

Because of our sin we not only experience physical death but spiritual separation from God. Spiritual death is ultimately an eternity without God in Hell. BUT…

…the free gift of God…

Last Christmas when you unwrapped a gift I doubt that you opened it then pulled out $20 to pay there person for you gift! No!

A gift in it’s very nature is free. God knows our helpless state and gave us a gift that is 100% free. And that gift is…

…eternal life…

God offers us eternal life with Him starting now and continuing in heaven for all eternity! We don’t have to separated from from because of what has done through…

… Christ Jesus…

Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross the only way for us to be forgiven of our sin and receive the free gift of eternal life. In order to accept this gift we must make Jesus our…

…Lord.

Receiving Christ involves turning from our sin and turning to Jesus for forgiveness. It means that you are going to follow him as the Lord of your life. He gets to call the shots. When we make Jesus the Lord of our life we receive all that he as for us and will spend eternity loving him!

If you have never made the decision to follow Jesus then make it today!  What are you waiting for?

How To Experience The Peace And Joy That Comes From Being Saved- Romans 5

From my reading in Romans 5 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

The Christian life should be one characterized by joy.

If you have been saved then you can rejoice in all that you have received in Christ!  The Apostle Paul said,

Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.” Rom 5:1-2

When you receive Christ’s forgiveness you can confidently and joyfully stand before God.

Not only are we made right through Christ, we also will share in his glory!  That is something to celebrate!  Later in the chapter Paul says,

“So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.” Rom 5:11

Through His death on the cross Jesus opened up a way for us to experience a friendship with God!  Jesus is the way to true joy and peace in life. If you are looking for it in other ways then you are looking in the wrong place.

We Are Saved By Faith, Not Works! – Romans 4

From my reading in Romans 4 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

We don’t have to do anything in order to be saved, other than trust Jesus with our lives.

“But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.” Rom 4:5

Our works don’t work!

Faith is the only thing that really works when it comes to being saved. Paul used the example of Abraham to explain that faith is really the only thing that saves you and not good works,

And because of Abraham’s faith, God counted him as righteous. And when God counted him as righteous, it wasn’t just for Abraham’s benefit. It was recorded for our benefit, too, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in him, the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.  He was handed over to die because of our sins, and he was raised to life to make us right with God.” Rom 4:22-25

Jesus did all the work necessary for our salvation.

Jesus lived a perfect life in our place, then he died in our place. He did this so that we can be made right in God’s sight!

God will count us righteous also if we will put our faith in him, offering him our lives.

What is holding you back from putting your faith in Jesus and receiving eternal life?

The Only Solution For Sin – Romans 3

From my reading in Romans 3 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

The world is full of problems.

Violence. Injustice. Famine. Disease. Pain. Broken relationships. The reason for this is sin.  The Bible teaches that since the first sin, people have been born with a “sinful nature”. That basically means we can’t help but sin. We can do some good things, but we will always end up messing it up some how. In one of the most quoted verses in the Bible Paul says…

“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” Rom 3:23

Everyone has sinned!

The world is messed up because our sin has messed it up. Instead of getting depressed about all the horrible things sin as brought let’s look at the only solution for sin. Most people quote vs. 23 and don’t quote 24-26 which says,

Yet God freely and graciously declares that we are righteous. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past,” Rom 3:24-26

If you have put your faith in that Jesus’ sacrifice for you, then you are righteous in God’s sight.

If God were to eliminate all sin from the earth right now then he would have to eliminate everyone! He is patiently waiting for more people to turn to him for forgiveness of their sins!

Someday when Jesus will take us to his new Kingdom where there will be no more sin or any of it’s effects! When Jesus died on the cross he won the ultimate victory over sin and we get to share in that victory!

Praise God I don’t have to pay the penalty for my sin because Jesus did it for me!

Confessions of A Recovering Approval Addict – Rom 2

From my reading in Romans 2 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

I am a recovering approval addict.

In my past, I have cared way too much what others think of me. I still get a little nervous going into social situations because I want to make a good impression.

Unfortunately, I’m not the only one who struggles with this. Many of us change who we are to fit the status quo of those around us. Many of us check our Facebook or Instagram at least once an hour to see who liked our post. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans says something powerful about whom we are trying to please. He is talking to people who are trying to impress others and be right with God by following Jewish laws, like being circumcised.

“No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people” Rom 2:29

A person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, NOT PEOPLE!

Religious people are especially vulnerable to falling into the approval trap. If you play the game, say the prayers and do the good deeds, then you are seen as holy. But someone who truly pleases God is one who is humbly living to glorify God.

Who are you trying to get praised by? People or God?

I challenge you to live for God and stop worrying so much about what people think!

The Shame Of Being Ashamed Of The Gospel – Rom 1

From my reading in Romans 1 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

It is a shame to be ashamed of the good news.

If the gospel has changed your life, then why hide it?

Jesus died so that I can have life. If I am ashamed of the gospel, basically I’m saying I appreciate the sacrifice you made for me but I want you just for myself. How selfish!

I am guilty of not sharing when I have been given the opportunity.

Now, this should NOT be a guilt trip that if I am not sharing aggressively all the time than I am sinning. It should be a wake up call to start trying to boldly take opportunities to share when they come up.

Paul is a great example of boldness in sharing. He said,

“For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.” Rom 1:16

The gospel is powerful.

When we experience that life changing power personally we should be motivated to share it with others.

Are you ashamed of the gospel? Have you been missing opportunities to share? If so start seizing those opportunities today!
