From my reading in Acts 19:21-41 in the One Year New Testament.
When we take the good news of Jesus seriously our idols are worthless.
Often people have something to loose when idols are threatened.
Marketers thrive on idols.
Comfort. Popularity. Fun. Success. Happiness. These are all potential idols that advertisers promise when you by their products. These things are not bad in themselves, they are bad when they are put above all else and ultimately above God in our lives.
An idol is anything that takes the place of God in our lives.
In Ephesus Paul encountered people who literally lost business because Paul was preaching that Jesus was the one true God and all other idols are false! A silversmith named Demetrius lost a lot of business because his silver idol business was suffering! Here’s what he said,
“But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren’t really gods at all. And he’s done this not only here in Ephesus but throughout the entire province!” Acts 19:26
This was bad for the idol business and it ended up starting a riot! If the god’s were not really god’s then what is the point of them!
When Jesus enters our lives there is no room for idols.
Are there any idols in your life that you need to get rid of?
If so, make like the Frozen girl and let it go!
