Paul’s Advice… If You Are Married, Have Sex Regularly – 1 Corinthians 7:1-19

From my reading in 1 Corinthians 7:1-19 in the One Year Bible New Testament.

Marriage  is the only legitimate place for sexual activity.

Because of this, Paul recommends those who have strong sexual temptations to get married and find their sexual fulfillment there.  The reason Paul gives for this is…

Regular married sex helps each other avoid temptation to find fulfillment elsewhere.

“But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband. The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. ” 1 Cor 7:1-2

When you are having your needs met by your spouse, outside temptations are not as appealing. Because of this Paul encourages married couples to have sex regularly.

Don’t deprive your spouse.

“The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife. Do not deprive each other of sexual relations, unless you both agree to refrain from sexual intimacy for a limited time so you can give yourselves more completely to prayer. Afterward, you should come together again so that Satan won’t be able to tempt you because of your lack of self-control. I say this as a concession, not as a command.” 1 Cor 7:3-5

Prayer is the only reason Paul gives for not having sex, but even then, he says that it should be short time so that Satan isn’t able to tempt you.  Paul says this as advice and we would be wise to listen to him.

If you are not married you should not be having sex for any reason with anyone.

For who are married let this be a reminder to enjoy your spouse regularly.
