What To Do Before A Big Decision – Luke 6:1-26

From my reading in Luke 6:1-26 in the One Year New Testament.

Jesus took the decision about who his apostles would be very seriously. Jesus chose only 12 men out of many to be his apprentices.

Jesus taught many but he only trained a few.

He knew that he could only truly get close with a few so he chose twelve men to train deeply. Here’s what he did before making the very important decision of who his apostles would be.

“One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles.” Luke 6:12–13

Jesus went away and prayed!

He prayed all night before choosing the 12! The way Jesus made this big decision was praying all night.  He wanted to seek the Father’s will about the situation.

If you have a big decision to make I encourage you to pray about it!

You might not have to pray all night, but maybe it should be more than just a sentence request. We should spend an adequate amount of time to not only present our requests, but listen to God’s voice for the answer.

Are you making a big decision?

Pray!

Can Your Faith Be Seen? – Luke 5:17-39

From my reading in Luke 5:17-39 in the One Year New Testament.

Faith You Can See

A group of guys (I picture them as twenty somethings) did something crazy to bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus. There was no way into the doors of the building where Jesus was teaching, so they got on the roof, tore a hole in it and lowered their friend down! Here was Jesus’ reaction to this radical act…

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, “Young man, your sins are forgiven.” Luke 5:20

There are several lessons in this story but I want to focus on one phrase, SEEING THIER FAITH. Jesus saw the faith of these men and most likely the paralyzed man’s faith because they were willing to do something unusual to get to Jesus.

True Faith Will Be Seen

I am challenged by this story to live my faith. I don’t just want to talk about my faith, but do something tangible. I want to trust God to spiritually and physically heal the people around me and have the faith to take risks for his glory. So ask yourself…

Can my faith be seen?

Get Away And Pray! – Luke 5:1-16

From my reading in Luke 5:1-16 in the One Year New Testament.

Jesus was a busy man. He had a lot of people clamoring for his attention.

“But despite Jesus’ instructions, the report of his power spread even faster, and vast crowds came to hear him preach and to be healed of their diseases.” Luke 5:15

He had instructed the leaper he healed not to tell anyone but instead the news of his miraculous healing power spread like wildfire. He had vast crowds of people coming to hear him preach and be healed. There many spiritually hungry people to minister to, but first Jesus had to feed himself spiritually.

“But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.” Luke 5:16

Jesus Often…

Jesus made it a regular practices to get away and pray. Fellowship with the Father a priority for him. We should follow Jesus’ example and make withdrawing to pray a regular part of our lives.

How often do you get away to pray?

Withdrew…

Sometimes you have to get away. Turn off your phone and go somewhere you won’t be distracted. Jesus would sometimes spend all night in prayer but you could start with just 30mins or 1hr and it would make a huge difference.

To The Wilderness…

There is something about being in God’s creation that calms and reminds us of his greatness. It is refreshing to spend time away from the stress and constant motion of modern life.

I enjoy time regular times of withdrawing to my hot tub which is surrounded by trees. Being in nature allows me to relax in God’s presence and pray. I also like to go to a near by lake where I have claimed a bench as my “prayer spot” (see pic at top). I would like to do this even more.

For Prayer…

Jesus didn’t just go away to relax. He went to connect with God. The strength of your prayer life is one of the best indicators of the strength of your walk with God. Ask yourself…

Where could I go to pray and get away from distractions?

How often would I like to go there?

For how long would I like to try and pray for?

I challenge you to get away and pray and see what God does in your relationship with Him and in your personal ministry.

Why Were People Amazed At Jesus’ Teaching? – Luke 4:31-44

From my reading in Luke 4:31-44 in the One Year New Testament.

Amazing Teaching

Why were people amazed at Jesus’ teaching? Here’s the answer…

“They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.” Luke 4:32

Most of the teachers of the day taught without authority, but Jesus spoke based on his Father’s authority. Jesus’ words had power because they were the words of God himself!

Authority Over Demons

After casting out an evil spirit by ordering it, “Be quiet! Come out of the man” the people marveled at the power of Jesus’ words.

“All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” Luke 4:36

Jesus’ words had such power and authority that even evil spirit’s obeyed. The power of Jesus is amazing. And his Word still holds power today.

When a preacher wants his message to have authority he must be basing what he is saying on God’s Word. That is where the power is. Not in his delivery or illustrations or alliterated outlines.

God’s Word is what makes preaching powerful, not the personality of the preacher alone.

There is power when a fully surrendered, Spirit filled person shares God’s Word. If you have the privilege of teaching or preaching God’s Word I challenge you to let IT speak. Count on God to bring your message that authority and power and not your own skill.

Christ’s Response To Injustices Like Human Trafficking – Luke 4:1-30

From my reading in Luke 4:1-30 in the One Year New Testament.

Jesus Came Into It (The World) To End It…

One of the important social justice issues of our generation is human trafficking. I am excited that many Christians and organizations like The End It Movement are stepping up to help those living in this tragic reality. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, he opened the scroll of Isaiah and read the prophesy about the chain-breaking work he would do as Messiah.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18–19

Jesus did all these things and He is continuing to do them through his spiritual body, the Church.

There are many other applications to these verses, but in this article I am going specifically focus on how these verses apply to fighting human trafficking.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me…

Without the Spirit’s power, we can not hope to see lasting change in people’s hearts. The Holy Spirit must be working to change hearts of the traffickers, consumers, and victims alike.

He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor…

When people receive Christ, they are transformed into new people, and eventually their desires will change as well. Those men who are addicted to sex can be transformed by Jesus and the demand for sex trafficking will decrease. Also, it is possible for the traffickers themselves to be transformed if they will repent of their vile actions.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind…

Jesus proclaimed freedom for the prisoners. As a follower of Jesus, I want to be a part of setting captives free. When you play a part in helping stop human trafficking you are a part of setting people free. Also, Jesus literally opened physical and spiritual eyes in his ministry!

to set the oppressed free…

Imagine the oppression the victims of human trafficking experience. When you play a part in exposing and releasing people from this you are helping set the oppressed free!blogger-image-395916165

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor…

In the Bible Expository Commentary, Warren Wiersbe writes about how the year of the Lord’s favor refers to the the “Year of Jubilee” where every five years “… slaves were set free and returned to their families, property that was sold reverted to the original owners, and all debts were canceled. The land lay fallow as man and beast rested and rejoiced in the Lord.”

Jesus came into it to end it!

It is the privilege of the church to continue to be about setting captives free spiritually and literally in this fight against human trafficking!

Are you in it to end it?

A Special Moment Where All Three Members Of The Trinity Are Observed – Luke 3

From my reading in Luke 3 in the One Year New Testament.

One of the only moments where people were able to observe all three members of the trinity at once was the baptism of Jesus. Luke writes it this way.

“One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.” Luke 3:21–22

Jesus was being baptized, symbolizing the start of his public ministry.

The Holy Spirit descended on him to show us his endorsement.

The Father clearly said Jesus was his beloved son who gives Him great joy.

The trinity is one God and three distinct persons, and those three persons were observed at the moment of Jesus baptism. After that moment the trinity kept working together on Christ’s redeeming mission.

Jesus was led by the Spirit and prayed to the Father regularly. He depended upon the Father and the Holy Spirit daily for relationship and guidence. In the same way we should depend up on the trinity in our walk with God.

When we receive Christ we experience  fellowship with the Trinity.

When we enter a relationship with Jesus, we also have the privilege of relating to all three members of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit guides and convicts us. Through prayer we have unhindered access to the Father with Jesus as our mediator! What a privilege!

What Did Jesus Do During His Teens and Twenties? – Luke 2:25-52

From my reading in Luke 2:25-52 in the One Year New Testament.

The Teens and Twenties Are For Training!

There is an awesome story of 12 year old Jesus who went to Jerusalem for the Passover festival with his parents. When the feast was over, his parents started on their way back and realized Jesus was not there! They searched high and low; this is what they found.

The Task Is To Ask

“After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.” Luke 2:46–47

Jesus was wise to sit and listen to what the teachers of God’s Word said! Asking questions is one of the best ways to learn. I heard a well known pastor say this in a sermon on asking questions:

“The task is to ask! Ask the right people, the right questions, in order to get the right answers.”  Ed Young Jr.

Jesus was fully God; he was also fully human. He still engaged the process of learning God’s word. Asking questions and listening to the experts was one of the great ways to do that. We can see that Jesus had amazing understanding and was able to answer questions with wisdom beyond his years.

One of the pastors I look up to is Andy Wood at South Bay Church. He asks more questions than anyone I know, and because of that God has blessed him with a lot of wisdom in how to build a successful church. Ask yourself these questions:

What am I currently going through that I need wisdom about?

What older person could I ask about it?

Through asking questions of older people (even your parents) you can gain wisdom in all different areas. You can ask about money, dating, dealing with conflict, hard-to-understand parts of the Bible, and big decisions you are facing.

Don’t be to shy to ask a question!

What Did Jesus Do From Ages 12-30?

We basically have two verses that describes what Jesus did all of his teens and twenties.

Jesus Was Submissive

“And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them.”  Luke 2:51

Learning to follow is the greatest prerequisite for leadership. Jesus was submissive to his parents in childhood and was submissive to the Father throughout his life.

Submission is the path to accomplishing God’s mission.

The next verse summarizes the areas Jesus grew in as a teen/twenty-something.

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.” Luke 2:52

Jesus Grew In Wisdom

Jesus learned. In his ministry, it was evident that he knew the scriptures better than anyone and he used it wisely. Not only knowing the scripture, he also grew in wisdom about how life works and how to deal with people. We see this wisdom throughout the gospel accounts as he encounters various questions, critics and difficult situations.

Jesus Grew Physically

It doesn’t say that Jesus lifted weights or ran, but he did literally grow up! Also, we know that his father, Joseph, was a builder. We assume that Jesus spent much of his time building with heavy materials and was in good physical condition.

Jesus Grew In Favor With God

Jesus already had an eternal connection with the Father and the Holy Spirit. How could he grow in favor with God? Jesus grew in favor with God by staying continually connected to God. People in their teens and twenties should make connecting with God an absolute priority to build a spiritual foundation for their lives.

Jesus Grew Relationally

Jesus grew in favor with people. He grew in people skills. One of the most important things a teen or twenty-something should know is how to relate to people well. This one vital area will impact your success in life tremendously. Jesus used these people skills effectively to lead his ministry and impact thousands!

Which of these areas do you need to grow in?

A Key To Happiness… Treasure The Moment – Luke 2:1-24

From my reading in Luke 2:1-24 in the One Year New Testament.

Treasure The Moment

The Christmas story is filled with profound and life changing details, but one detail stood out to me today. It was about something that Mary did that I believe to be one of the keys to happiness in life. This is only an example and not a command, but I believe that if people learn to do this one thing they will experience new levels of contentment.

But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.” Luke 2:19

Life is a gift. That first Christmas Mary experienced one of the greatest moments in human history. Mary wisely thought of these precious moments often. We see this as a pattern in Mary’s life, because in a different story of Jesus as a boy in the temple it says this about Mary.

“And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.” Luke 2:51

Mary understood that certain moments are filled with meaning and significance. She was wise to seek to remember these moments.

Remembering God’s goodness in the past helps us trust God for our future.

What Does It Mean To Treasure A Moment?

Louw Nida lexicon defines the greek word συντηρέω for treasure here as…

“to exert mental effort in storing information so as to have continual access and use of it—‘to cause oneself to be fully aware of, to keep in mind, to remember.”

Treasuring the moment involves making an effort to remember the moments of God’s goodness in your life.

Mary didn’t have an iPhone to instagram baby Jesus #savior #peaceonearth #swaddletime. She just had her memory.

Don’t rely on technology alone to help you remember the moments of God’s goodness, take a mental picture and enjoy the moment for what it is. Being fully in the moment is one of the keys to happiness.

A different kind of mother, Mother Theresa, the world-renowned philantopist who worked with dying people said,

“Be happy in the moment, that’s enough. Each moment is all we need, not more.”

I know it sounds cliche, but now is the only time any of us actually experiences. I believe we would lead much happier and full lives if we learn to slow down and treasure the special moments God gives us each day.

What Was John The Baptist’s Role? – Luke 1:57-80

From my reading in Luke 1:57-80 in the One Year New Testament.

John the Baptist had dramatic events that surrounded his birth and people wondered,

“What will this child turn out to be?” For the hand of the Lord was surely upon him in a special way.” Luke 1:66

Zechariah had been muted during before John’s birth was then filled with the Spirit and gave a powerful prophecy about John the Baptist’s role.

John Was A Prophet of God

“And you, my little son, will be called the prophet of the Most High” Luke 1:76

After a drought of God speaking to his people through prophets John the Baptist would speak for God.

John Prepared The Way For Jesus

“because you will prepare the way for the Lord.” Luke 1:76

John’s task was to prepare the people for the coming of Christ.  How did he do that?

John Preached Forgiveness of Sins

“You will tell his people how to find salvation through forgiveness of their sins.” Luke 1:77

John baptized people who were willing to repent of their sins. This act of faith would prepare people to receive the message of forgiveness found in Christ.

John’s work was to prepare people’s hearts for Jesus who ultimately would save them and give us peace. Zechariah concluded with this epic prophesy about Jesus.

“Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.” Luke 1:78–79

No matter how dark our lives are Jesus is the light.

He offers us hope, peace, and eternal life with him forever.

Life In the Womb – Luke 1:39-56

From my reading in Luke 1:39-56 in the One Year New Testament.

One interesting story in Luke is when Mary went to visit her relative Elizabeth. Here’s what happened when Mary greeted them.

“At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” Luke 1:41

Baby John the Baptist jumped within Elizabeth in response to Mary’s greeting! It is interesting that even in their respective wombs John the Baptist and Jesus had a special connection.

It would not have crossed Luke’s mind to call the baby in the womb a fetus or lump of tissue. No, clearly the child that leaped already had life!

I believe that as followers of Jesus we need to speak up for this who can’t speak for themselves, and seek to protect life in the womb. For a good explanation and arguments about the pro life position check out the short book Why Pro Life? by Randy Alcorn.
